The real Functional Medicine from the specialist - Connectable Life

The Real Functional Medicine

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine treats chronic diseases through lifestyle-based systems solutions – not just by treating symptoms. It aims at identifying and addressing the root cause of a disease. Rather than only treating the symptoms, functional medicine endeavours to find and treat the underlying reason for the symptom or illness.

Have you ever found that if you stopped taking medication aimed at treating a particular condition or illness, the symptoms returned? This is probably because you are not dealing with the real issue at hand. The medication or treatment may simply be masking the symptom but not necessarily addressing the root cause.

Functional medicine is a science-based discipline that addresses the interplay between your genes, environment and lifestyle so that supportive measures address the right cause and may be used beyond symptom suppression. This approach may be used to address already established chronic disease or improve the risk of inheritable chronic disease.

Functional medicine sees the body with interconnected parts. It aims to educate the client on THEIR body and how it functions, and, in some cases, doesn’t function, so that the individual can make the best decisions and live their best life. As Functional Medicine Practitioner, Julie Allen-Rowland says, “Your Body is a Unique Web: Customise your Health! Health advice and feeling good about yourself is not a ‘one size fits all’.  Each person is completely different, with a different genetic make-up and different habits, as well as different likes and dislikes. We are dedicated to evaluating and changing ‘your’ health profile from a fundamental lifestyle perspective and we will project manage all aspects of your move towards vibrant health, as well as how you look.  Each person is viewed as an individual and guidelines are based on achieving your desired outcome.”

The future of medicine is understanding how your body functions, how it becomes imbalanced, and how to correct that balance. The focus is wellness over illness, pro-active over-reactive.

We have the power to heal ourselves and that power is knowledge. Functional medicine equips you with the right tools and knowledge to lead your healthiest life- from the inside out.

What can you expect?

If you decide that you are tired of being sick or sick of being tired, seeing a functional medicine practitioner is for you. So, what would this entail?

When you first meet with a functional medicine practitioner- they will spend some time listening to you and gathering information about YOU. They may also request certain testing be done. They will use this information to identify the root cause of why you may be feeling this way and then customize a healthy plan for you.

According to Julie Allen-Rowland, you may expect the following from a consultation/evaluation: https://live2ahundred.co.za/functional-health/

  1. Your present health status.
  2. Your present stress status.
  3. Evaluation of your individual dietary habits.
  4. Evaluation of Lifestyle habits. What can stay and what must change?
  5. Cellular health about vitamin and mineral status.
  6. Exercise for your personal lifestyle.
  7. We prioritise necessary changes specifically for YOU.
  8. Step by step approach.
  9. Practical household dietary and toxin cleanout.
  10. Small changes that make big differences.
  11. How to involve your family.
  12. Regular follow-up.
  13. Minimising risks of the big 5. Cancer, Diabetes, Heart disease, Stroke, Osteoporosis.
  14. How to work with necessary medications to increase benefit and minimise side effects.
  15. Gene profiling to investigate the inherited risks.

“We will give you all the tools you need to make these changes and assist you with regular follow-up contact to assess your progress every step along the way. Vibrant health includes the interplay between the genes we inherit, the food we eat, the activities we perform and our levels of stress. Often, we know something is wrong because, despite regular medical attention, we just feel poorly. We have tried all avenues and no longer know where to turn. We are bombarded with information but have no way of knowing what is useful and what will waste our time and money.

We will assess your present health status comprehensively and then assist you on the step-by-step road towards longevity and vibrancy,” says Julie Allen-Rowland.

Who should see a functional medicine practitioner?

According to Cleveland Clinic, anyone facing a chronic condition can benefit from functional medicine.

Some of the most common conditions treated include:

  • Adrenal disorders.
  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
  • Arthritis.
  • Asthma.
  • Autoimmune diseases.
  • Cancer prevention.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Diabetes.
  • Digestive disorders.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Environmental and food allergies.
  • Women’s health disorders (PMS, menopause and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • Metabolic syndrome, prediabetes and insulin resistance.
  • Thyroid disorders.

But functional medicine is great for everyday problems, general health and wellbeing and anyone that just wants to thrive too. It is a way of life.

“From “everyday” health problems like unusual hair loss, abdominal bloating, sluggishness and PMS to serious health issues like cancer, autoimmune diseases, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, functional medicine can help you prevent or reverse health problems or better manage chronic medical conditions,” says Dr Klimenko. Functional Medicine Summed Up

Between the Bridges Healing Center perfectly summarizes the following 5 points about functional medicine:

  1. Personalized Healthcare

It is about YOU. Functional medicine takes the approach that every person is unique.

  1. Science-Based Medicine

The most up-to-date genetic science research is employed in functional medicine in order to craft a wellness plan specifically for the patient.

  1. Active Approach to Healing

Functional medicine aims to optimize the functioning of the individual’s organs and tissues and to heal and help prevent diseases associated with aging. It is proactive rather than reactive.

  1. Re-Balance of Body Systems

The human body has a natural ability to balance and self-regulate all of its internal systems. Functional medicine can help to correct an imbalance of substances within the body which may have come about as a result of illness, medication, or environmental or lifestyle factors.

  1. Optimizing Health and Wellness

Ultimately, functional medicine focuses on optimizing an individual’s health, wellness, and vitality. This approach can be used to prevent, treat, or slow the progression of many degenerative conditions throughout the body.
