Points to consider when taking the steps to mental health counselling

Other aspects to research and consider are what benefits you may have available from your insurance/medical aid provider, what your budget is, whether you would prefer an online mental health chat, online counselling or in-person counselling and if there are any forms of mental health help you resonate with. Once you have found this out, you will then be able to search for counsellors that meet these criteria.


Basic steps to finding mental health help

  1. Self-reflect and acknowledge you may need some guidance.
  2. Ignore all excuse-making and COMMIT to making an appointment no matter what.
  3. Research your options: ask friends/ family that have been to therapy; ask your medical aid if you have any benefits and research different counselling techniques.
  4. Decide on whether you would like online or in-person counselling.
  5. Find someone that meets the criteria above.

Am I experiencing postpartum depression?

Post-Partum Depression occurs after childbirth. Those who develop it are at greater risk of developing major depression later in life. So, it is vital that it is treated. Treatment can include counselling, antidepressants, or hormone therapy. Baby blues are normal and affect up to 80% of women, while postpartum depression affects 10-20% of women. Baby blues last 2-3 weeks with the onset post birth, while postpartum depression can go on for weeks, months and even years. Onset is anywhere from 0-12 months post birth.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
