Mental Health Care is Life -Time, Availability, Cost, Stigma

Are you doing these tips for a better life? Mental Health Care is Life!

Good Mental Health Care, Happiness and Peace is everything; it is life; it is the most important thing we have. Everybody is affected by mind, body and wellness related issues at some stage of their lives.

Mental Health, Happiness and Peace is EVERYTHING; it is LIFE.

So, why is it the most neglected field of health care in the world? Why do so many people neglect their mental health care, or fail to seek help?

According to the World Health Organisation, mental health is: “… a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

The World Health Organisation stresses that mental health “is not just the absence of mental disorder.”

1 in 4 people are affected by mental disorders at some point in their lives.  Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental disorders- making them the leading cause of ill-health and disability worldwide. According to these statistics, nearly 2/3rds of people with a KNOWN mental disorder never seek help from a health professional. Depression is closing in on our communities and our loved ones, maybe even you? Around 800 000 people die as a result of suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29 year olds.

According to Medilexicon’s medical dictionary, mental health is: “Emotional, behavioral, and social maturity or normality; the absence of a mental or behavioral disorder; a state of psychological well-being in which one has achieved a satisfactory integration of one’s instinctual drives acceptable to both oneself and one’s social milieu; an appropriate balance of love, work, and leisure pursuits.”

Why are people not taking care of themselves and their mental health, then? We believe this is because of time, availability (reach), cost and stigma.

We all know

Our Mental Health Care System is failing us, you just need to watch the news to see that this is true.

This led us to creating Connectable Life, which we believe will counteract these issues.

Time:

People often do not have the time to go to therapy or see a practitioner for varying reasons- we believe an online portal/platform will make this easier as people can receive therapy at a time and place that best suits them. Be it that you would like to have a consultation in the privacy and chosen time of your own home or in your lunch hour at the office. No more having to drive across town, wasting precious time.

Remember TIME is a precious commodity

we cannot get back, so the little time we

have, we need to use it wisely!

Availability:

As of January 2023, 5.16 billion internet users. We are living in a society that is built on instant gratification and convenience; the internet offers both of these.  There is only one psychiatrist per 100 000 people in over half the countries in the world. The lack of access to treatment makes the course of the illness more severe. There are simply not enough specialists, therapists, psychologists etc. to service the number of mental health and body issue casualties. More to the fact, people often live in areas that do not offer this service at all. An online platform eliminates this issue, offering a remote service that is accessible to anyone, anywhere.

There are 5.16 billion internet users.

Cost:

We all know that health care specialists are expensive and very often unaffordable for most people. We don’t take into consideration that these specialists have external overheads which push up their prices even more. On this platform, we allow specialists to set their own rates- which should be more affordable, working from the comfort of their own homes. Hopefully, due to a large, in-house server of specialists -prices will be competitive. Not to mention that different countries have different going rates, some countries are far more expensive than others, Connectable Life being an international platform means that people will be able to seek counsel and help from more affordable specialists from countries that charge more affordable rates.

Stigma:

Confidentiality is key! One of the major reasons people do not seek help is due to the stigma that surrounds it. We hope that by creating an online platform, where people can seek help from the safety of their own home or preferred space, this will encourage people by assisting them to feel less weary, scared or judged. Our platform will be completely confidential to ensure client safety and security.

We are living in an age where you don’t need to let one of these 4 aspects hinder or stop you from getting the help and care you need. If you are needing to reach out and seek help, please do! Don’t become one of those health care statistics because something stood in the way of you seeking the help you needed. Connectable Life wants to be the help people need!

Online counseling mental health care and therapy
Stacey Spilsbury

My passion is people and healing! My purpose is to help as many people as I can, and normalize therapy of all forms. My journey hasn't always been an easy one; as a child, I was diagnosed with a number of learning disabilities, which meant many hours of therapy. Of which I will always be grateful for. I went on to study marketing and business, during this time, I went through a massive life change. Questioning every decision I had made up to that point, which led me onto a road of self-discovery, church and the bible. Losing 25kg and exploring a new way of doing life, I grew some wings and explored the world. Spending a couple of years working in the sales department for an 'off-plan property investment company', in London. Afterwhich coming back to South Africa to marry the man of my youth, where we now share in the joy of raising our crazy brood of 4 little boys on a farm in rural South Africa. After a series of life events, and seeking the counsel of a therapist in order to find my own personal healing. This journey, leading me to pick up the books again and study, Career Guidance Counselling. All of this helped propel my passion of Mental Health and Physical Wellness. It was through a conversation, in 2019, with my darling friend Jess, in which we hatched up the concept of 'Online Therapy of all forms - Mind, Body and Wellness.' At this point, it had not been done before, and therefore we couldn't walk away. This is where it started, we co-founded and now co-own Connectable Life- making mental health and wellness easy, accessible and stigma-free. Our goal is to make, 'the therapy space,' accessible to all who need it. Highlighting the power of healing for everyone, wellness over illness.
